UZ Leuven and K.U. Leuven have jointly expanded the Health Sciences Campus Gasthuisberg with a new Ambulatory Center, designed by POLO Architects, DETOO Architects, AAPROG architects and Studieburo De Klerck. This five-story building significantly enlarges the existing outpatient clinic, better preparing the hospital for the increasing demand for ambulatory care. The new center brings together consultation services previously scattered across different campuses, increasing efficiency and accessibility for patients.
The design emphasizes adequate daylighting through three light canyons, which bring daylight deep into the building and create a pleasant environment for both patients and staff. There is also a clear separation between staff and patient circulation flows, contributing to an efficient and patient-friendly experience. The consultation rooms are designed to be generic and multifunctional, with flexibility and future use in mind. Moreover, the “one-stop” principle is adopted, whereby patients can, as much as possible, undergo all necessary consultations and examinations during one visit.
