St. Bavo Cathedral’s new visitor center combines historic heritage with modern construction techniques. In collaboration with Bressers, an infrastructure was realized that is both functional and sustainable, with attention to integration into the historical context.
Advanced techniques were employed to reinforce the foundations and support structures, essential for the protection of the century-old building. The use of innovative stabilization techniques ensures that the cathedral can withstand visitor loads and the impact of time. In doing so, high-quality materials compatible with the existing building were chosen to avoid damage.
The center’s climate control is designed to best protect the interior and the artworks on display. Systems for temperature and humidity control ensure a stable environment, while modern insulation and airtightness contribute to energy efficiency.
Thanks to this forward-thinking approach, the visitor center not only provides a safe and comfortable space for visitors, but also helps preserve the unique heritage value of St. Bavo Cathedral.
